New mattresses these days are a little pricey. In addition to that, some of them do not last long. There is a possibility that you are spending a lot on mattresses that will only serve their purpose for a few years or so.
Use The Old Mattress
There is no harm in finding out what the current condition of the old mattress is. If it has been stored properly, it should still look like new right now. All you have to do is find out if it is being inhabited by bed bugs or dust mites. They do have a way of settling even when the mattress is encased in tightly-packed covers.
Once you have made a proper assessment on the mattress and you deem it ideal to use, you can start cleaning it and freshening it up. After being cooped up in the attic, it should smell musty and moldy. Try carrying the mattress to an open area where you can clean it properly.
Vacuum all sides of the mattress. Use a vacuum cleaner with HEPA filter or High Efficiency Particulate Air filter to get rid of minute dust particles in the air. This will also ensure that dust particles will not get transferred to other parts of the mattress.
After vacuuming the bed thoroughly, prepare your cleaning solution. Try using a cup of distilled white vinegar and mix it with two cups of warm water. Distilled white vinegar can disinfect the mattress. It can get rid of germs, molds and bacteria. Moreover, it can also help get rid of dingy mattress stains. Spray the cleaning solution on all sides of the mattress. But do not completely soak the mattress in it. Just spray it on the surface of the bed. Let it stay there for an hour or so.
After the allotted time, get a damp cloth and wipe the surface of the mattress. You should get rid of lingering stains at this point. Sprinkle loose baking soda on all sides of the bed. Cover the mattress with a plastic wrapper. The baking soda will help diffuse unwanted mattress odor.
Vacuum the mattress once again and let it dry completely. After it has dried up completely, you can use it already. Try placing fresh sheets. You might also want to add a mattress topper to improve mattress comfort.
Do Not Use The Old Mattress
If the mattress has signs of dust mites and bed bugs infestation, I suggest ditching the idea of re-using it and just purchase a new one. You can't sleep well if the mattress is riddled with micro organisms.
