Once your mattress becomes old and unusable, a big question that arises is how can you recycle your old mattress. Our mattresses contain various chemicals and materials that are not at all environmentally friendly such as polyurethane, formaldehyde, volatile organic compounds and petroleum based materials amongst others. So if you want to be eco-friendly, the best thing to do is take your old mattress for recycling at a recycling center.
When mattresses are recycled, they are pushed into the conveyor belt in which they are cut from the top and bottom using special saws. In this way, cotton fiber and polyurethane foam is separated. The pieces of metals present in the mattress are separated magnetically and the rest of the stuff is shredded. The entire process doesn't take more than three or four minutes in all. In this way, the mattress is not allowed to post any threat to the environment.

Some of the best options where you can get your old mattress recycled include:
Craig's list
The well known saying that one person's garbage is another person's treasure comes true in this case. In the present time when the economy is bad, a large number of people would be more than happy to receive a free mattress.
Freecycle
Freecycle is an organization comprising of various local groups in which its members donate and exchange various things for free to make sure that everything gets recycled instead of ending up in the landfills. With the help of this organization, you can donate your old mattress to any person who is in need and is willing to pick it up from the organization. Check whether there are freecycles groups in areas around you.
Local Government
A large number of local bodies and government agencies offer the facilities for mattress recycling. Check whether your local government does the same.
Ecohaul
This is an organisation that pledges to do anything to keep things from being dumped into landfill. So if you can't find any other ways of recycling your old mattress, have your mattress hauled away by this organisation.
Be Creative
If you are unable to find any groups or bodies that are willing to recycle the mattress, then you can use some creativity and try to find ways to reuse the stuff inside the mattress. For instance, the foam can be used in your child's art work or project, or for making small pillows and cushions.
Trying to find ways to recycle your old mattresses will keep them from causing harm to the environment.

Queen Size SLEEP TITE by Malouf Mattress Protector - 100% Waterproof-Eliminates Dust Mites -15 Year Warranty Overview
Preserving your mattress with a Sleep Titeª mattress protector is imperative. Sleep Tite mattress protectors prevent the accumulation of moisture and skin flakes in your mattress; an unprotected mattress creates an optimal environment for the breeding of bacteria, dust mites, and bed bugs. The protective material is 100% waterproof and will shield your mattress from all liquid stains. If a stain were to reach the mattress, most mattress manufacturerÕs warranties are void.Every night your body sheds millions of skin flakes and loses up to 1 liter of body fluid through your skin pores and mouth. Up to 2 million dust mites can live in your unprotected mattress. Dust mites survive on dead skin cells and bodily fluids that are abundant in your bed. Allergic reactions are caused by the waste and skin these dust mites leave behind. Exposure to dust mites has been proven to lead to the development of asthma in young children. Allergens produced by dust mites are the most common trigger for asthmatics. Dust mites have been shown to be a leading cause of eczema. Sleep Titeª mattress protectors cut off the food supply to dust mites, making it impossible for them to survive.
The innovative Sleep Titeª material is 100% waterproof and breathable. The 100% cotton terry surface absorbs up to one liter of liquid. The microscopic pores of the polyurethane membrane allow air passage, but block liquids. The unique design allows body heat to pass through to the mattress, maintaining a comfortable sleeping temperature. The ultra-thin fabric dynamically conforms to the natural shape of the mattress. Waterproof, breathable, noiseless mattress protection that wonÕt change the feel of your bed.
